Since 1653 ...
According to the land register provided by SODEQ, manager of the Place-Royale real estate portfolio, the foundation of the first building to house our parent branch dates from 1653.
The name of La Maison Smith honors Charles Smith and his descendants who occupied the place for almost a hundred years during the 18th and 19th centuries. The name "La Maison Smith" as well as the year "1653" are therefore a historical nod which highlights the exceptional heritage of this sector by emphasizing both elements from the French Regime and the English Regime.
It was during the opening of our fifth branch in Limoilou that we made a new discovery! We learned that dear Charles Smith had owned an estate called Smithville in this neighborhood, most likely including our cafe on 3rd Avenue.
The story repeats itself !
Pure chance or funny coincidence?
